Casino Falls

Edward S. Sorenson

O’er a wall of dark and massive stone
    The waters flow,
With a ceaseless, dreary monotone,
    That years ago
Mingled with a mother’s dying moan,
    And cries of woe.

For where the waters fall and circle round,
    With hoary crest,
And while was heard above the forge’s sound,
    And children’s jest,
The blacksmith’s wife,* the children’s mother, found
    Eternal rest.

Long years have flown since then, and still is heard
    That moaning cry,
That will not cease while o’er its rocky bed
    Swift torrents fly,
But when from Lindsay Mount to Lennox Head
    The course is dry.

Edward S. Sorenson, Casino

*Mrs. Gray, who was washing clothes on the rocks on the
day she was drowned in the “boil.” The smithy stands on
the bank above the falls.
