A Withered Rose

Edward S. Sorenson

‘Tis but a flow’ret pressed and dead
    Before me lies—
A rose that once was fresh and red,
And by the fragrance sweet it shed
   ‘Neath azure skies—
A gentle maiden thither led,
    And then it dies.

A rose, though dead, its odour gone,
    I still revere;
A rose that seems but yestermorn
By a maiden fair was shorn,
    And from her bier
By this hapless bard was borne
    And treasured here.
