Never Part in Tears

Edward S. Sorenson

Never let sad tears at parting
    Upwell to dim thine eye.
Laugh although thy heart be smarting
    And ease the last “good-bye.”

For ‘tis better far to saver
    Without the sight of tears,
Even though we part for ever,
It is the smile that cheers.

Remember at the parting place,
    That many a weary mile
Is lighten’d by the happy face
    That wears a cheery smile.

The time may seem an age to-day
    That he will absent be;
But swiftly ‘twil have pass’d away
    When he returns to thee.

It is the good-bye words that are
    Remembered after years,
And last looks haunt his dreams afar—
    Then never part in tears.
