Sonnet—To The Clarence

Edward S. Sorenson

Broad winding stream of many wooded isles,
Grand haven from the rovers of the deep,
That, free for raging storms, may calmly sleep
Upon thy bosom favoured with the smiles
Of Peace and Beauty for ten score of miles;
Along thy banks wild nomads sported free,
Monarchs of thy woods, of every hill and lea,
Who now a busy folk each hour beguiles
Upon the soil so oft enriched by thee.
Where skims the wild black duck and water hen,
In tiny crafts, and hailed with loud acclaim.
In past days sped thy world-wide famous men—
Thy sturdy sons of toil thou brought to fame,
To crown with honour thine immortal name.
