Whispers in the Woods

Edward S. Sorenson

The breezes come murmuring over the lea,
A message pathetic they whisper to me:
Go roam the wild woods as thou roamed them of yore,
But with thee thy lover will roam them no more.
She’s far from the home of her ancestors now,
And free from the ills of this cold earth, I trow,
In the pure snowy robe of the gods she is drest,
Then alone roam the wild woods, thy lover’s at rest.

Oh, above the bright stars that now shine in the skies,
Why wistfully look for thy lover’s blue eyes?
Why tread the lone paths where she oft tripped along,
Enlivening the woods with her laughter and song;
Why stand by the brook where thy story was told,
As the sunset was tinting the woodland with gold,
And thou tasted a breath that was sweeter than mine,
As her sweet cherry lips awhile trembled on thine?

Oh! I roam these wildwood lands because it was she
In the days that have vanished endeared them to me,
Thro’ its cool shaded bowers in the evenings we strolled,
Where the pretty wild flowers their bright petals unfold;
By the brook’s crystal waters that run their glad race
I first met my loved one, first saw her sweet face;
There I told thee I loved thee while holding thy hand,
And thy whispers of love the winds bore thro’ the land.

And I fancy I hear in the evening-wind’s song,
As it rustles the branches and murmurs along,
The love-words that fell from thy lips soft and low,
When thy silk-creases touched me, thy fair cheeks aglow.
Ah! little we thought as we kissed by the brook,
Into each other’s eyes we should never more look!
Ah! while the winds murmur o’er woodland and stream,
My sweet vanished love, here of thee I will dream.
