Stolen Kisses

Edward S. Sorenson

A timid clasp, a sudden kiss,
    When eyes had flashed a greeting;
Her fair flushed cheek 'gainst mine—and this,
    That night was Love's first meeting.

No voices marred those moments fair,
    Only the starlight shining;
Thrilled by the soft touch of her hair.
    My neck her arms were twining.

We spoke no word of love, and yet
    Love-wounded hearts were beating
The note of twin desires that met
    When other cares were fleeting.

And lip to lip, and heart to heart—
    How close a woman presses,
I felt the gentle night wind dart
    Among her truant tresses.

Tho’ blue eyes looked with fond regard,
    We 'thused not in love fashion,
Just kissed beside the broken yard
    With heart-consuming passion.

You see, her dad was standing near
    And he wore heavy bluchers;
We left the rest unsaid, for fear
    They might despoil our futures.
