The Leatherhead tumbles about in the gums,
A rollicking fellow is he,
Who loves the sweet blooms where the honey bee hums,
And his antics are funny to see;
For he drops from a branch and turns over and o'er,
Like a bird falling dead from a tree,
But gracefully lands, with no hurt to deplore,
Yards lower, and chuckles with glee.
No beauty has he, with his naked black crown,
And a prominent-knob on his bill;
But among the wild birds he's the merriest clown,
With a circus on every hill,
Where Falcons that scatter bright, frolicsome bands,
He meets with the flick of a quill,
And betimes when a nest his protection demands,
He enters the fray with a will.
